The area

No one does London in a weekend, so choose a side. Central London gives you the South Bank walk along the Thames, Tate Britain at Millbank, the bookshops of Bloomsbury and a glass at Gordon's, a wine bar under Victoria Embankment since 1890.

East London is where the energy is. Go on a Sunday morning for the Columbia Road flower market, or a Saturday for Broadway Market in London Fields. Walk Victoria Park and the Regent's Canal towards Hoxton, where the Museum of the Home is free, then eat on Kingsland Road, known locally as Pho Mile for its Vietnamese kitchens. The Olympic Park in Stratford has become a cultural quarter in its own right. Summer, May to September, is when the East End is at its best.

South of the river, Brixton is one of the city's cultural hearts, with the best Caribbean food in town and a strong live music scene.
