Our notes

What you get

An oasis in the Munich buzz, and one with a story. The Sofitel occupies what was once the Royal Bavarian Post Office, built between 1896 and 1900 by the Bavarian government in a neoclassical style, with symmetrical windows, pilasters and pediments. Bavaria kept its own postal service even after joining the German Empire in 1871, and this was the main mail distribution centre of the Kingdom, until it was merged into the German national post in 1919.

The building worked as a post office until the early 1990s. Accor then took it on and, between 2002 and 2004, had local architects Fred Angerer and Gerald Hadler open up the floor plan, while the interior architect Harald Klein redesigned the rooms, including ten historically themed suites. It opened as the Sofitel Munich Bayerpost in 2004 and joined Historic Hotels Worldwide in 2018. You can still feel the old hall in the generous volumes, the arched windows and the lounge under the glass roof.

The rooms are the first thing to praise. They are extremely well designed and functional, and remarkably quiet for a hotel beside the main station. The sound insulation is excellent, both against the outside and against other guests. The station is still under construction and will be for a couple more years, but it did not affect our stay at all. The Bluetooth sound system in the room is also excellent, among the best a five-star hotel offers.

The spa and gym are stylish and modern, with massages and other treatments on offer. The pool is large enough for proper swimming as well as for relaxing, and there is free water and fruit, with apples to take. The staff there are kind and helpful.

Breakfast has good variety, including a French brut Crémant. The staff are helpful and kind, although the live kitchen was a little overcrowded for a five-star hotel. We have not yet tried the restaurants. The tarts and cakes from the patisserie are of good quality and available all day, which suits anyone with a sweet tooth.

The bar is well run, with kind and helpful staff. Reception and the porters are fast and efficient.

Where to eat and drink in the hotel

There are three places under the roof. Délice La Brasserie is the main restaurant, serving a French menu in a room that mixes traditional German touches with modern French ones, with decorative wallpapers, hanging lamps and ceramic tiles. In fine weather you can sit outside on its terrace. Schwarz & Weiz is the breakfast restaurant, where the buffet includes Munich Weisswurst, sliced bacon and French cheese; it can also be booked for private dinners and events. Isarbar, named after the river, is the hotel bar, with signature cocktails, fine wines, a terrace and a library, and the Bayerpost Currywurst among its snacks.

From our own stay: we have not yet tried the restaurants, so we cannot say how Délice compares. Breakfast was good, though the live kitchen was crowded. The bar was well run, and the patisserie's tarts and cakes are available all day.

Around it

The location is excellent: right in the centre of Munich, and easy to reach by train as well.

Munich is old enough to carry a lot of history lightly. Henry the Lion founded the city in 1158, and for centuries it was the seat of the Wittelsbach family, who ruled Bavaria until 1918. It became the capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806, and in 1810 a beer festival held to celebrate a royal wedding grew into the Oktoberfest. Munich was heavily bombed in the Second World War and rebuilt largely along its old street plan, which is why so much of the centre still feels historic. It hosted the Summer Olympics in 1972.

My favourite place in Munich is the Schreiberei, and in particular its Bar Tatar. The tartare shown in the photographs here is from there, and it is worth a visit in its own right, whichever of the hotels you choose.

For the food of the region, go to the Viktualienmarkt, Munich's open-air food market in the old town. It is the easiest way to try the different foods of Bavaria in one walk: grilled sausages, bread and pastries, cheese, and stalls where you can eat standing up.

Beyond that, these are the traditional Bavarian dishes worth ordering. Weisswurst, the white veal-and-pork sausage, comes with sweet mustard and a pretzel, and tradition says it should be eaten before noon, though many restaurants now serve it all day. For something cold, order a Brotzeit platter of sausage, ham, cheese, radishes and pickles, or Obatzda, a spread of soft cheese with butter and onion, with a fresh pretzel. For the main course, the classics are Schweinshaxe (roast pork knuckle with crisp skin), Schweinsbraten (roast pork cooked in dark beer, with dumplings) and Hendl (half a spit-roasted chicken); Leberkas in a roll is the quick version, and Kasspatzn, baked cheese spaetzle with fried onions, is the vegetarian one. The Hofbraeuhaus and Augustiner are the beer halls most often named for all of this. For dessert, try Kaiserschmarrn, Dampfnudeln with vanilla sauce, or Apfelstrudel.

Our take

One thing to know: the hotel also runs as a congress centre, and during those events the feeling of a five-star stay suffers a little.

Outside those days, the rooms, the quiet and the service make this a very good base in the middle of Munich.

The area

Munich has loosened up. The old conservative image still fits the opera house and the museums, but the city now has a younger side, from the Schlachthofviertel nightlife district to the Isar, where a long rewilding project has turned the riverbanks into a place to sunbathe and swim in summer.

Walk from Odeonsplatz through the Hofgarten into the Englischer Garten, larger than Central Park. Eat at the Viktualienmarkt, the city's open-air food market. On Sundays the state museums charge one euro, and the Alte Pinakothek is the one to choose. The Hirschgarten, dating from 1791, is one of the biggest beer gardens anywhere.

For an evening, the Bavarian State Opera is among the best in Germany. Gärtnerplatz is the centre of the gay scene; Freddie Mercury lived nearby in the early 1980s.

Munich on foot: three hotels and a Bavarian table

Munich has loosened up. Three good hotels in the centre, the sights worth the walk, the Bavarian dishes to order - and picks from our two Munich experts, Peter and Christina.
