When to go

The cheapest month we have found is January, at around USD 325 a night - -56% against what this hotel usually asks.

Where to book

Where a hotel takes bookings on its own site, we send you there first. It is usually the cheapest way in, and the only one where a rewards discount counts.

Our notes

A boutique hotel in the old guild streets of the City

Vintry & Mercer opened in 2019 in the City of London, among the livery halls and narrow streets that run down to the Thames. The name comes from two of the area's trading guilds: the Vintners, London's wine merchants, and the Mercers, who sold fine silks and damasks. The hotel plays on that history across its 92 bedrooms and suites, with deep velvet headboards, antique-map wallpaper and brass reading lamps.

The hotel presents itself as a five-star property and belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World. We have no official star grade on file, so we lean on its guests' verdict instead: 9.4 on Booking.com from 2,136 reviews, with the location scored 9.6 (read on 1 November 2026).

Food and drink are part of the draw. The Mercer Roof Terrace looks across the skyline from the dome of St Paul's to the Shard and serves British cooking built on sustainably sourced meat and fish, and Vintry Kitchen is the hotel's restaurant. The Library, a private room for up to 32 seated guests, and the Drawing Room can be hired for dinners and gatherings.

When it pays off. On our checks the cheapest nights fall in January: a standard double came to about GBP 244 a night for 11-14 January 2027. Early December was dearer and above our USD 750 ceiling, so this is a hotel to book in the quiet weeks.

Our verdict. Together with Club Quarters St Paul's, this is my favourite hotel in London. The dining is better than at Club Quarters, and the Mercer Roof Terrace, with its view across London, is the reason to come: it has its own restaurant as well as Vintry Kitchen downstairs, and we tried a delicious crumble up there. Downstairs there is also a moody bar in deep red, which turns its afternoon tea into a theatrical, smoking affair for Halloween, while the terrace serves a more traditional tea with a view of the Shard. There is a gym too. The staff are really nice, and each morning the hotel offers an exclusive newspaper service and delivers the paper to your room. The rooms carry a Marshall speaker, and the sound is fantastic, so bring your playlist. The catch is size: the standard rooms are a little tiny, so if space matters, book a deluxe room or compare Club Quarters.

The area

No one does London in a weekend, so choose a side. Central London gives you the South Bank walk along the Thames, Tate Britain at Millbank, the bookshops of Bloomsbury and a glass at Gordon's, a wine bar under Victoria Embankment since 1890.

East London is where the energy is. Go on a Sunday morning for the Columbia Road flower market, or a Saturday for Broadway Market in London Fields. Walk Victoria Park and the Regent's Canal towards Hoxton, where the Museum of the Home is free, then eat on Kingsland Road, known locally as Pho Mile for its Vietnamese kitchens. The Olympic Park in Stratford has become a cultural quarter in its own right. Summer, May to September, is when the East End is at its best.

South of the river, Brixton is one of the city's cultural hearts, with the best Caribbean food in town and a strong live music scene.

London: two sides of the city, and where to sleep for under USD 480

Nobody does London in a weekend, so pick a side. The West End and the South Bank, or the East End's markets and canals. And the hotels we track that still come in under USD 480 a night.
