Our notes
Villa Gallici
Villa Gallici is a Relais & Châteaux hotel in an 18th-century Provençal residence, a few minutes' walk from the centre of Aix-en-Provence. The house is decorated in a baroque, boudoir style and has 23 rooms and suites, set in a garden of cypress trees around the heated outdoor pool, with plane trees shading the restaurant patio.
The gourmet restaurant is La Taulla Gallici, and in summer (June to September) the Italian restaurant La Dolce Serata opens. The spa has two treatment rooms, a sauna, a jacuzzi, cryotherapy and a fitness space. The hotel also has a wine cellar and free Wi-Fi throughout.
On Google Maps we read 4.8 from 537 reviews on 19 September 2026. Photographs: the hotel's own website.
The area
Aix started as a Roman spa: Aquae Sextiae, founded in 123 BC around thermal springs the Romans had discovered, making it one of the oldest Roman settlements in Gaul and giving the city both its name and its enduring nickname, the "city of a thousand fountains." The springs are still there, quietly, under a town now better known for the Cours Mirabeau - a broad avenue shaded by plane trees and interrupted every hundred metres or so by another fountain, the loveliest and mossiest of them, the Fontaine Moussue, warm to the touch from the thermal water still feeding it after two thousand years.
Aix is also inseparable from Paul Cézanne, born here in 1839 and painting the surrounding countryside - above all Mont Sainte-Victoire, visible from the edges of town - for most of his working life; his studio, the Atelier des Lauves, is preserved much as he left it and is a short walk from the old town. Between the two, the old quarter is worth simply wandering - the Saturday market on Place Richelme, the honey- coloured stone facades, and a stop for calissons, the almond-and-candied-fruit sweet that has been made here since the fifteenth century and is still Aix's most-exported souvenir.
