Our notes
Summer or winter
All year. Summer puts Lake Scharmutzelsee at the centre of the stay, with long evenings by the water and the hotel's terraces at their best. But Villa Contessa works just as well when the weather does not: we stayed in March, when it was genuinely cold outside, and would happily do it again. The heated outdoor pool and extensive spa make cold and grey weather feel more like part of the plan than something to work around. For a weekend built around the spa, good food and doing very little, winter may actually be part of the appeal.
What you get
A family-run 5-star superior boutique hotel directly on Lake Scharmutzelsee, with just 14 rooms and suites spread across the original Villa Contessa and the newer Grand Villa.
The rooms vary considerably in size and style, but every one comes with its own balcony or terrace. We would choose a suite with lake view - and, if you want to make a weekend of it properly, one of the suites with a private whirlpool and terrace overlooking the water. The small scale is part of what makes Villa Contessa work: it has the facilities of a much larger luxury spa hotel without feeling like one.
The Grand Spa is substantial enough to build an entire weekend around, with indoor and heated outdoor pools, saunas, steam bath, Jacuzzi, relaxation areas and an extensive range of massages, beauty and wellness treatments. We stayed when it was cold outside and found that this only made the spa more appealing.
Dinner is at the Villa Contessa Restaurant, the hotel's own fine-dining restaurant overlooking Lake Scharmutzelsee - part of the experience rather than simply the convenient option downstairs, and another good reason not to make too many plans away from the hotel. Villa Contessa also offers packages combining the stay with elements such as dinner, spa treatments or seasonal experiences; worth checking before booking separately, particularly if the plan is a weekend built almost entirely around the hotel.
Our take
Villa Contessa works particularly well as a weekend escape because you do not need much of an itinerary once you arrive. With only 14 rooms, it remains unusually intimate for a hotel with such an extensive spa - you can spend the day moving between the heated outdoor pool, sauna, a treatment, your room and the lake without the atmosphere of a large wellness resort.
A lake-view suite would always be our choice. Add a private whirlpool and terrace if the weekend is meant to be entirely about switching off. The combination of the lake, the spa, the small scale and dinner at Villa Contessa makes this somewhere we would happily visit at any time of year. Summer gives you the lake. Winter gives you an excuse not to leave the spa. We would happily take either.
The area
Bad Saarow is Brandenburg's oldest spa town, built around a genuine thermal spring - the Catharinenquelle - discovered in the early twentieth century and still what the town's name and its "Bad" prefix refer to. The water comes up as a rich saltwater brine and still supplies the local thermal baths today, heated across several pools in the 34-36°C range, alongside the mud treatments (Moorbäder) the region has offered for over a century. What makes the town rather than the springs worth the trip out from Berlin, about an hour east, is the Scharmützelsee itself: one of the largest lakes in the region, ringed by pine forest rather than development, with a shoreline promenade, sailing and a golf course that has made this a discreet retreat for Berliners for generations without ever turning into a resort town in the crowded sense. It is the kind of place that rewards slow afternoons - a walk along the lake, a thermal bath, an early dinner - over a packed sightseeing list.
