What the arches actually give you

The great windows in the lounge are the thing photographs never quite capture: sit at almost any table and the Engadin peaks fill the frame before you notice there was a window there at all. The terrace does the same trick outdoors - loungers and umbrellas set out on a lawn that runs straight toward the mountains, with the hotel's own tennis courts cut into the slope beside it and an old boundary obelisk still standing on the grass.

The house also draws more than skiers through its doors. We caught the St. Moritz Longevity Forum in session here this September, one of a run of conferences and private events the hotel hosts through the year - the kind of booking that fills the wood-panelled dining rooms with a gala dinner rather than a wedding party.

Suvretta House opened on 16 December 1912, and it was built for winter first: one of the first ski lifts in Switzerland went in here in 1935, still running today, which makes this St. Moritz's one genuine ski-in, ski-out address. The Grand Restaurant's Art Deco ceiling and honey-oak panelling date from the same era. Book it in season and the grandiose winter scene - the lift running from the garden, the peaks white above the terrace where the sun loungers stand empty - is the whole reason the address exists.

Worth timing a winter stay for: Snow Polo on the frozen lake

Every January the Snow Polo World Cup is played on the frozen Lake St. Moritz, four high-goal teams chasing the Cartier Trophy on a pitch of ice. Reto G. Gaudenzi founded it in 1985, and the town's first polo field dates back to 1899, laid out for stationed English cavalry. Watching is free; reserved seats in the Perrier-Jouët Chukker Club were USD 73 ≈ €66 at the 2019 edition, with a glass of champagne and a blanket included. Around the pitch sit a grandstand, a VIP tent, hotel tents in the Polo Village and Sprüngli pastries. Roughly 18,000 people came over the three days in 2019.

The ice has to be at least 20 cm thick, and the municipality's ice experts watch it from November, so check the dates for the year you plan before you book a room. For a stay at the Suvretta House it makes a good Saturday: ski in the morning, polo in the afternoon.
