Royal Hotel Sanremo
The Royal Hotel Sanremo, at Corso Imperatrice 80, has been welcoming guests since 1872, according to its own website, in a park setting on the Ligurian coast above the Mediterranean. The swimming pool in the grounds was designed by Gio Ponti in 1948 and is one of the property's signature features.
The hotel has a beach, a garden, a Lawrence Lounge in the lobby named after the hotel's founder Lorenzo Bertolini, restaurants serving Ligurian and Mediterranean cuisine, and the award-winning Royal Wellness centre. The rooms and suites include sea-view and hill-view categories.
We class it as a five-star grand hotel of the Riviera di Ponente: a historic house with a long seaside tradition rather than a new build. Photographs: the hotel's own website.
The area
Sanremo is the Italian Riviera at its most self-consciously glamorous, and much of that comes down to two institutions the town invented. The first is the Sanremo Music Festival, running since 1951 and still Italy's biggest television event every February - a national songwriting contest that predates, and by most accounts directly inspired, the Eurovision Song Contest launched five years later. The other is the Casino di Sanremo, opened in 1905 in a grand Art Nouveau building on the seafront and still one of only four legal casinos in Italy, a legacy of the town's belle-époque years as a winter retreat for European royalty and the wealthy escaping colder climates further north.
Away from the festival crowds, Sanremo earns its other nickname, the "City of Flowers": the coastal microclimate here supports large-scale flower growing, particularly carnations and roses, and the trade has shaped the town for over a century, from the export warehouses down by the harbour to the flower market that still runs most mornings. The old town, La Pigna, climbs the hill behind the seafront in a spiral of covered stairways and arches built for defence rather than views, a quieter, older Sanremo a few minutes' walk up from the promenade and the casino.
