Our notes

A five-star on the Lapad peninsula

The Royal Ariston stands on the Lapad Peninsula, the green, residential side of Dubrovnik, a short walk from a Blue Flag beach. It is one of five hotels in the Royal Dubrovnik Resort, so guests can use the facilities spread across the complex, including several outdoor pools. The Royal Spa is for guests aged 16 and over, with an indoor pool, relaxation area, steam bath, Finnish sauna and treatments.

The Old Town is not on the doorstep. Guest reports put the bus into the centre at around fifteen minutes, and a taxi is short. That is the trade: the quiet of Lapad and an evening swim, against a ride to the walls.

The area

Dubrovnik grew rich as the maritime Republic of Ragusa, which ran its own affairs for centuries and protected them with the city walls that still ring the Old Town. The Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979. It was shelled in the 1991-92 siege and has since been repaired, which is why the terracotta roofs you see from above are newer than the stone beneath them.
