Our notes

The hotel

Palazzo Tirso is a five-star boutique hotel in Cagliari's historic centre, in a grand palazzo opposite the tourist harbour and close to Via Roma. According to the hotel, it joins the city's historic charm with a modern design, and it has 85 rooms. It belongs to Accor's MGallery collection.

There are two restaurants: Terra, a fine-dining restaurant open for dinner only, and Cielo, an all-day restaurant on the rooftop terrace with views over the city and the Golfo degli Angeli. A rooftop pool and a spa by L'Occitane complete the picture. Access to the spa costs a separate fee per person (EUR 50 per entrance at the time we read the site) and includes 90 minutes of sauna, hammam and a heated indoor pool; it is closed on Tuesdays and needs a reservation. The hotel also runs excursions on its own catamaran.

The railway station is 1 km away, the maritime station 500 m, and the airport 10 km. Photographs are from the hotel's own website and credited to it.

The area

Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, a port city built on hills above a wide bay, the Golfo degli Angeli. Its centre is made up of four historic districts: Marina, the old harbour quarter beside Via Roma; Stampace; Castello, the walled upper town on the hill; and Villanova. The hotels on the harbour front sit right at the foot of this old core, so most of it is within walking distance.

The city has been a port for a very long time, and the layers show. A Roman amphitheatre cut into the rock is still there, as are the Pisan-era towers of the Elefante and San Pancrazio and the Bastione di Saint Remy, a grand terrace over the rooftops. The Citadel of Museums, the botanical garden and the harbour are close by on foot.

For the sea, Poetto is the city beach, a long, lively stretch about ten minutes by car from the harbour, with beach clubs and sport. The Molentargius salt pans on the way are a nature park where flamingos are often seen. Boat trips leave from the tourist harbour.

Cagliari is a year-round city and lacks the crowds of the island's summer resorts in the shoulder season. Late spring and early autumn are generally the most comfortable months for walking the hill districts and still swimming. The airport is about 10 km from the centre.
