Our notes
One&Only Royal Mirage
One&Only Royal Mirage is a five-star beachfront resort on the Arabian Gulf coast of Dubai, looking across the water to the towers of Dubai Marina. The resort's own description is of Arabian elegance with elevated energy: sea-facing rooms and suites in the Arabian Court and The Residence overlook 65 acres of palm-filled gardens and a one-kilometre stretch of private beach. Private beachfront villas are also available.
The resort has the Arabian Court pool with beach access, a hammam and the One&Only Spa, and a choice of restaurants that the resort describes as running from a beach club to pan-Asian, Levantine and Indian fine dining; afternoon tea is served in the Samovar Lounge. Activities on offer include hot air balloon flights over the desert, with a falcon show and Arabian breakfast, and the resort runs experiences for families as well as couples. It is part of the One&Only brand of Kerzner International.

The area
Most visitors see Dubai from a resort terrace. It is worth one day on the other side. Start in Al Fahidi, the restored old quarter of wind towers and pearl merchants' houses, then eat in Karama, the low-rise neighbourhood where the Indian community cooks.
For art, Alserkal Avenue is a cluster of galleries in old marble-factory warehouses. The Museum of the Future sits in the financial district. In the evening, the Jumeirah Fishing Harbour has good seafood with the boats in front of you.
If you are up early, rent a bike for the Al Qudra track and watch the sun rise over the desert. A crewed boat for a few hours is cheaper than it sounds, and it gives you the skyline, the Burj Al Arab and the Palm from the water. October to April is the season; summer is too hot to do any of this.
