Our notes
The sea that will not let you sink
The Dead Sea sits 427 metres below sea level - the lowest point on the surface of the earth - and its water carries roughly ten times the salinity of the open ocean, dense enough that swimming turns into floating whether you mean it to or not. That density is also why nothing lives in it, which is the reason for its name and, oddly, the reason people have been coming here for thousands of years anyway: Herod the Great built one of the world's first health resorts on this shore, and the black mineral mud pulled from its bed still turns up as the base ingredient in cosmetics sold well beyond Jordan. The shoreline itself is worth the walk before you even get in the water - the salt crystallises into white ridges and formations at the water's edge, reshaped constantly as the sea slowly recedes.
Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea sits directly on that shore in Sweimeh, on the Jordanian side across the water from Israel and the West Bank, close enough to the Jordan Rift Valley's other landmarks - Mount Nebo, Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan - to make a half-day trip out of either. The practical case for staying on the water rather than driving in for the day is the mud and the float themselves: both work best undiluted by a long car journey either side, and the hotel's own spa treatments use the same mineral mud straight from the source.
