Our notes
Why this address, and not one further out
Petra was carved from the 4th century BCE onward as the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, a desert trading power rich enough to cut an entire city into sandstone rather than build it - tombs, temples and a theatre, all worked directly into the rock rather than assembled from it. The approach has not changed since: a walk of a little over a kilometre down the Siq, a canyon so narrow in places that the sky above narrows to a ribbon, before it opens without warning onto Al-Khazneh, the Treasury facade, cut two storeys high into the cliff face opposite. It is the single most photographed moment in Jordan and still manages to surprise people who arrive having seen the photograph a hundred times before.
The Treasury is the beginning of the site, not the whole of it. Past it, the valley opens into the Street of Facades and a Roman-era theatre cut into the hillside, and a climb of some 800 rock-cut steps leads up to Ad Deir, the Monastery - larger than the Treasury, far less crowded, and worth the knees it costs. Mövenpick Resort Petra sits directly opposite the site's entrance, which matters twice over: guests can be through the gate at opening, ahead of the tour buses and the worst of the heat, and can walk back for Petra by Night - the Siq lit by candles three evenings a week, ending at the Treasury for Bedouin music and tea - without arranging a transfer back from further away.
