Mont Cervin Palace
The Mont Cervin Palace is a five-star hotel in the centre of Zermatt, at Bahnhofstrasse 31, which the hotel presents as an address as legendary as the Matterhorn. Its rooms and suites come in two styles, Alpine and Chalet, and range from the Alpine Only Me room through Junior Suites and the Pollux and Castor suites to Chalet Open Suites and the Chalet Suite Le Petit Cervin. Family guests have one- and two-bedroom suites and a family duplex suite.
The hotel has several places to eat and drink: Grill Le Cervin, Joseph's Bar and Terrace, Ristorante Capri with its Capri Bar, and the Salon Davidoff. The Spa Nescens includes a 20 x 8 m indoor pool kept at 28 degrees in winter, two whirlpools with a view of the Zermatt mountains, a separate children's pool, and in summer an outdoor pool and lawn in the middle of the village. The area
Zermatt was an unremarkable farming hamlet until 1865, when Edward Whymper's British-led expedition became the first to reach the summit of the Matterhorn - and then, on the descent, four of the seven climbers fell to their deaths, in one of the defining disasters of the golden age of mountaineering. The tragedy made the mountain, and the village beneath it, famous overnight; climbers and then tourists have been arriving ever since, and several of that first expedition's casualties are still buried in the climbers' cemetery beside the parish church. The other thing Zermatt is known for is having no cars at all - only battery-powered taxis and municipal vehicles are allowed, a rule kept in place since early in the twentieth century specifically so that nothing would pollute the view of the mountain above town. The result is a village that is genuinely quiet in a way few Alpine resorts still manage, reached only by train or the electric shuttle from the car park down the valley in Täsch. Tourism now accounts for roughly half of all local jobs, but the Matterhorn itself - visible from nearly everywhere in the village, changing colour through the day - is still the reason almost everyone comes.
