Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai

Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai is a five-star beachfront hotel on Jumeirah Beach Road in Jumeira 1. The hotel's own site calls it a stylish urban resort overlooking the clear water of the Arabian Gulf, with the skyline of Dubai, dominated by the Burj Khalifa, in the distance. It is a few minutes from Downtown Dubai and the city's cultural and lifestyle districts, yet the setting is a seafront one, with a long lap pool lined with palms, cabanas and beachside terraces.

Accommodation is divided into rooms, club rooms, connecting and family rooms, and suites, among them Suite 1755 and a Presidential Suite with its own rooftop plunge pool. The hotel lists several restaurants and bars: Tasca by José Avillez (contemporary Portuguese), Netsu by Ross Shonhan (a Japanese steakhouse) and Netsu Bar, Casita by Casa Amor (Mediterranean), The Bay (a beachside brasserie), Beluga (caviar), Noor Lounge for tea, the Sun Vibe pool bar and The Mandarin Cake Shop. There is also a spa, a fitness centre and a club lounge.

The area

Most visitors see Dubai from a resort terrace. It is worth one day on the other side. Start in Al Fahidi, the restored old quarter of wind towers and pearl merchants' houses, then eat in Karama, the low-rise neighbourhood where the Indian community cooks.

For art, Alserkal Avenue is a cluster of galleries in old marble-factory warehouses. The Museum of the Future sits in the financial district. In the evening, the Jumeirah Fishing Harbour has good seafood with the boats in front of you.

If you are up early, rent a bike for the Al Qudra track and watch the sun rise over the desert. A crewed boat for a few hours is cheaper than it sounds, and it gives you the skyline, the Burj Al Arab and the Palm from the water. October to April is the season; summer is too hot to do any of this.
