Our notes
LUGANODANTE Boutique & Lifestyle Hotel
LUGANODANTE is a boutique and lifestyle hotel in the historic centre of Lugano, a short walk from the lake. The hotel describes itself as classified 4 Star Superior and built on the idea of hybrid hospitality: the lobby works as an urban lounge for guests and locals alike, and a green garden courtyard invites visitors in. The interior is playful and design-led. According to the hotel, furniture by Saba and amber lights by Catellani & Smith were chosen or custom-made, the reception is built around a large monolithic piece of furniture in walnut, blue and coral, and neon signs reading "Lost in Paradise" lead from the lobby to the restaurant.
That restaurant and mixology bar, Flamel, carries a GaultMillau listing and is themed around alchemy, with a marble cocktail counter, Verpan bar stools and chandeliers by Lambert & Fils. The rooms are offered in several categories from basic and double rooms to premium rooms, suites and family rooms. The hotel lists a supervised 24-hour garage, a complimentary Ticino Ticket for public transport and attractions in the canton, and a multi-purpose meeting room.
Our review record puts it among the best-rated hotels in Ticino: TripAdvisor 4.8 from 2,852 reviews, read on 26 August 2026. Part of that history predates the 2020 renovation, so recent reviews carry the weight. Photographs: the hotel's own website, luganodante.com.
The area
Lake Lugano is smaller and quieter than Como or Maggiore next door, and it has the advantage of being entirely Swiss on one side and Italian on the other without either half feeling like a border town. Lugano itself is compact enough to see on foot: the arcaded old town around Piazza della Riforma, the lakeside promenade through Parco Ciani, and LAC, the glass cultural centre on the water that has turned the city into a genuine stop for contemporary art rather than just a stopover on the way to Milan.
Two funiculars go straight up from the centre - Monte San Salvatore and Monte Bre - and either one clears the lake haze on a clear day for a view that reaches to the Alps and, south, into Italy. A boat is the better way to see the rest of the lake: Gandria, a fishing village built directly into the cliff with no road wide enough for a car, is twenty minutes from Lugano by water, and the Isole di Brissago - a private botanical garden planted with subtropical species across two islets - make a full afternoon out of the trip. Morcote, at the lake's southern tip, is the same boat line's other end and the prettiest single village on the water, worth the full journey down even for those staying in Lugano itself.
