Our notes
Le Marne Relais
Le Marne Relais is a small farmhouse hotel in the Piedmont hills above Costigliole d'Asti, with 14 rooms and suites and a position on the border between the Langhe and Monferrato wine country. It sits among the vineyards of the Mura Mura estate, whose winery is only a few metres from the front door, and the hotel's own wine tasting room pours the estate's wines. According to the Small Luxury Hotels of the World page, each room and suite honours a different local artist or poet, and select suites have private terraces over the vines. A treehouse set among the vineyards is the most romantic bed on the property.
The restaurant, Radici, occupies a dining room with a vaulted brick ceiling dating back to 1878 and serves seasonal Piedmontese menus, with a terrace that opens onto the vineyards. The spa offers massages, treatments and "percorsi", sequences that move between the spa and the wellness area. There is a 25-metre indoor pool with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the vines, plus a sauna, whirlpool, cold tub and a Technogym fitness room.
The hotel is distributed through Small Luxury Hotels of the World and bookable through Hilton. It carries no official star rating, which is normal for a small Italian relais, so we judge it on setting and character rather than stars. Photographs: the hotel's own material on slh.com.
The area
Costigliole d'Asti is a working wine village rather than a tourist stop, and that is largely the point of staying here: its vineyards, at nearly 12 square kilometres, are the largest of any single commune in Piedmont, planted mostly to Barbera, the deep, food-friendly red that defines this part of the region and carries its own DOCG designation as Barbera d'Asti, alongside plantings of Dolcetto, Grignolino and the grapes behind Moscato d'Asti. The village itself, home to only around 6,000 people, takes its name from the Latin Corte Costeliolae and is watched over by an eleventh- century Gothic castle that changed hands repeatedly during the medieval Guelph-Ghibelline conflicts before settling with the Counts of Verasis Asinara - whose household later included Virginia Oldoini, better known to history as the Countess of Castiglione.
The village sits on the edge of the Langhe, the hillier, more famous wine country to the south, without the tour-bus traffic that part of Piedmont now draws - which makes Costigliole a quieter base for the same landscape: rolling vine rows, hilltop villages, and the truffle and Barbera harvests that shape the calendar here every autumn.
