Our notes
Jumeirah Al Qasr
Jumeirah Al Qasr is a five-star palace-style hotel in Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, on Jumeirah Beach Road at Umm Suqeim. According to the hotel's own website it opened in 2004 as the second hotel in the Madinat Jumeirah resort, and its Arabian-palace design is set around canal-style waterways shaded by lofty palms, with views of the Arabian Gulf and the Burj Al Arab. It has 294 rooms and suites decorated in traditional Arabian interiors, each with a furnished private balcony, looking over the ocean, the lagoon or the gardens.
Guests have access to the resort's private beach and temperature-controlled pools. The award-winning Talise Spa is on site, and the dining includes Pierchic, a restaurant suspended over the Arabian Gulf, and Pai Thai, as well as Al Nafoorah, The Hide, Bar Buci and Atrangi by Ritu Dalmia. Traditional abra boats glide along the waterways around the resort, and there is a kids' club.
This is a large, family-oriented resort rather than an intimate boutique hotel, so we judge it on its setting, its scale of facilities and its Arabian styling. Photographs: the hotel's own website, jumeirah.com.
The area
Most visitors see Dubai from a resort terrace. It is worth one day on the other side. Start in Al Fahidi, the restored old quarter of wind towers and pearl merchants' houses, then eat in Karama, the low-rise neighbourhood where the Indian community cooks.
For art, Alserkal Avenue is a cluster of galleries in old marble-factory warehouses. The Museum of the Future sits in the financial district. In the evening, the Jumeirah Fishing Harbour has good seafood with the boats in front of you.
If you are up early, rent a bike for the Al Qudra track and watch the sun rise over the desert. A crewed boat for a few hours is cheaper than it sounds, and it gives you the skyline, the Burj Al Arab and the Palm from the water. October to April is the season; summer is too hot to do any of this.
