Our notes
Hotel UTO KULM
UTO KULM is a hotel on the summit of the Uetliberg, Zurich's local mountain, with views over the city, the lake and the Alps. According to the hotel's own website it is a four-star house that "dazzles with a five-star view", with 45 rooms, 9 suites and junior suites, several restaurants and seminar rooms, a small hamlet of rustic dining spaces and a viewing tower, all on top of Zurich. Rooms come as panorama rooms facing the Alps and the lake or the city and the lake, and the Tower Suite has a fireplace and a bath under the roof.
The restaurants range from the elegant Winter Garden and the Sun Terrace to the hamlet, and a wellness oasis with sauna and steam bath offers a quiet place to relax after a day outdoors. The best view of the lake, the city and the Alps is from the turret with its large telescope or from the popular viewing tower.
Getting there is part of the experience: the Uetliberg train runs from Zurich to near the hotel, followed by a short walk. The review scores on file are mixed (Google 4.1 from 1,849 reviews, TripAdvisor 3 from 384, read in September 2026), so we include it for its location and views rather than for polish. The area
Zurich is usually a stop between the airport and the mountains. It deserves two nights. The old town is split by the Limmat and made for wandering; Bahnhofstrasse runs from the station to the lake past the banks and watchmakers.
For art, go beyond the Kunsthaus to the galleries in the former Lowenbrau brewery, then on to Zurich West, the old industrial Escher Wyss quarter with the Freitag tower of stacked containers. Langstrasse is where the city lets its hair down at weekends.
Along the lake: the Seebad Utoquai bathhouse, open to cold-water swimmers even in winter, and the Pavillon Le Corbusier. The city has its own mountain, the Uetliberg, 20 minutes up by S-Bahn, with trails and, when there is snow, a sled run back down. For breakfast, Sprungli's bircher muesli, and the Odeon cafe, open since 1911, for coffee.
Rüschlikon sits on the western shore of the lake, about 15 minutes by train from the centre.
