When to go

We do not yet have enough months on record to call a cheapest season for this one. It is on the tracker and this page updates as that fills in.

Where to book

Where a hotel takes bookings on its own site, we send you there first. It is usually the cheapest way in, and the only one where a rewards discount counts.

Our notes

Why this particular stretch of water

Lake Como has been pulling people in for two thousand years for a reason that has not changed: the water sits in a glacial trench deep enough - over 400 metres at its deepest, one of the deepest lakes in Europe - that it barely cools in winter, which is why subtropical gardens and cypress trees grow on slopes that should by rights be alpine. The result is a strange, specific beauty - snow-capped peaks standing directly over water warm enough to swim in through October, villages built right down to the shoreline because there was never anywhere flatter to put them. Pliny the Younger, who had two villas on this lake, wrote letters home about it that people still quote; the fascination it exerts on new visitors is the same one that had a Roman senator building a second house here just to look at it.

Torno itself, a few minutes up the eastern shore from Como, is a smaller and quieter version of the same thing: a stone harbour, houses stacked into the hillside, and the lake doing something different to the light at every hour - flat and silver at midday, gold and pink for the twenty minutes either side of sunset. There is no view of Lake Como that photographs badly, but the ones taken from the water itself, looking back at the shore rather than out across it, are the ones that actually explain what people mean when they talk about this place.

The area

The lake works best from April to October, and it is busiest where the famous names are. Bellagio and Varenna fill up by mid-morning in summer. The western shore is the better base: take the ferry to Brienno and Laglio, or walk the Greenway path through Lenno, and you get the same water and mountains with a fraction of the crowd.

Como itself deserves more than a change of ferry. Caesar founded it as a Roman settlement, the twelfth-century Porta Vittoria tower still stands, and the covered market has run since 1934. The villa gardens along the shore were built as botanical showpieces by the families who made their money in silk, and several are open to visitors.

Eat where the locals go: an old stone house above Tremezzo for mountain cooking, or a crotto on the eastern shore that has served lake fish since 1832.

Lake Como without the Lake Como price

The famous names on this lake now start around USD 1,800 a night, and a new wave of luxury openings is pushing that higher. Five minutes from the station, the same water and the same light go for under USD 241 - and the quiet western shore is a ferry ride away.
