Our notes
Small, modern and in the middle of the old town
Hotel Felix sits in the Niederdorf, the lanes of Zurich's old town on the east bank of the Limmat, a few minutes' walk from the main station. It was completely renovated and reopened as a modern city hotel in muted greys and brass, with a big piece of art in every room - and, in the public areas, a painting by the notorious art forger Wolfgang Beltracchi. It belongs to the small Meili Selection group of Zurich hotels.
Be clear about what you are booking: the standard rooms are compact (a double is about 16 square metres) and have no air conditioning, so it is a base for seeing the city rather than a place to linger in. The exception is the top floor, where a loft suite sits under the old timber roof beams with its own terrace over the rooftops, and there is a shared roof terrace too. The value case is the location: the Grossmünster, the lake and Bahnhofstrasse are all within a short walk, in a city where central hotels rarely come cheap. Book direct: our rate checks found the hotel's own site running a 15% 'Super Deal'.
The area
Zurich is usually a stop between the airport and the mountains. It deserves two nights. The old town is split by the Limmat and made for wandering; Bahnhofstrasse runs from the station to the lake past the banks and watchmakers.
For art, go beyond the Kunsthaus to the galleries in the former Lowenbrau brewery, then on to Zurich West, the old industrial Escher Wyss quarter with the Freitag tower of stacked containers. Langstrasse is where the city lets its hair down at weekends.
Along the lake: the Seebad Utoquai bathhouse, open to cold-water swimmers even in winter, and the Pavillon Le Corbusier. The city has its own mountain, the Uetliberg, 20 minutes up by S-Bahn, with trails and, when there is snow, a sled run back down. For breakfast, Sprungli's bircher muesli, and the Odeon cafe, open since 1911, for coffee.
Rüschlikon sits on the western shore of the lake, about 15 minutes by train from the centre.
