Our notes

Hôtel Chalet d'Adrien

Chalet d'Adrien is a five-star Relais & Châteaux boutique hotel in Verbier, in the Valais, about an hour and a half from Geneva. According to the hotel's own website it has 29 rooms and suites, two restaurants, a bar, lounges, a terrace, a spa, a swimming pool and a fitness room, all behind the timber facades of a traditional alpine chalet. Rooms and the terrace look straight across to the Alps.

The two restaurants cover different moods. Le Grenier is the traditional alpine restaurant, in a rustic decor of stone and wood, serving soups, raclette, fondue and braised dishes, with the same menu offered on the terrace at lunch. La Table d'Adrien serves Italian-inspired cooking under the banner "Saveurs d'Italie".

The spa offers a hammam, sauna and jacuzzi, treatment cabins using Clarins products, and a 16-metre pool heated to 29 degrees all year round, which opens onto a balcony with sun loungers in summer. We follow the hotel's own five-star classification and judge it on setting and character: a small, warm chalet in one of the Alps' best-known resorts. A ski town that never really closes for summer

Verbier built its name on winter - the 4 Vallées ski area is one of the largest in Switzerland - but the village runs a full second season from June to September that a lot of visitors never see. The same lifts that carry skiers in January carry mountain bikes and hikers in summer, up onto trails that cut through meadows thick with lupines in July, past herds of Herens cattle grazing within sight of the glaciers on the far side of the valley. The village itself stays busy at street level too - chalets doing double duty as ski-in restaurants in winter and terrace cafes and patisseries the rest of the year.

The real reason to time a summer stay around this village, though, is the Verbier Festival: seventeen days each July and August, founded in 1994, that turn a ski resort into one of the more serious classical music events in Europe. Three resident orchestras perform, alongside an academy that trains the next generation of soloists, and a free public programme - UNLTD - adds jazz sets and open-air concerts to the ticketed performances, several of them staged outdoors with the Combins as a backdrop. It is an odd and genuinely likeable combination: an afternoon on a mountain-bike trail or up among the cows, an evening at a concert that would not be out of place in Salzburg.
