What you get
This is a rental home rather than a hotel - apartment-style rooms in the old town of Como, with your own key and your own front door. It is here because we went and looked, liked it, and wanted it on the list. One of our hand-picked ones.
So: a lovely room and an address in the middle of everything. No concierge, no spa, nobody making you breakfast downstairs. If that trade sounds right, this is about as good as Como gets for the money.
Around it
Deep in the centro storico, so everything is on foot:
- Como Cathedral and the Broletto, two minutes away
- Basilica of Sant'Abbondio - Romanesque, eleventh century, and usually empty
- Funicular to Brunate for the view back down over the lake
- The ferry dock at Piazza Cavour for Bellagio, Varenna and Villa Carlotta
- Como San Giovanni for the twelve-minute train to Milan
Our take
The steadiest property we track on the lake: USD 161 ≈ €144 at its floor, USD 179 ≈ €160 typical, a swing of only 24%. You are not gambling on dates here, which on Lake Como is unusual enough to be the whole recommendation.
The property has no website of its own with photographs, so the photos on this page come from its Booking.com listing, where it showed 8.1 from 223 reviews when read in August 2026.
The area
The lake works best from April to October, and it is busiest where the famous names are. Bellagio and Varenna fill up by mid-morning in summer. The western shore is the better base: take the ferry to Brienno and Laglio, or walk the Greenway path through Lenno, and you get the same water and mountains with a fraction of the crowd.
Como itself deserves more than a change of ferry. Caesar founded it as a Roman settlement, the twelfth-century Porta Vittoria tower still stands, and the covered market has run since 1934. The villa gardens along the shore were built as botanical showpieces by the families who made their money in silk, and several are open to visitors.
Eat where the locals go: an old stone house above Tremezzo for mountain cooking, or a crotto on the eastern shore that has served lake fish since 1832.
