Our notes

A convent before it was a hotel

The building dates to the 1600s as a Franciscan convent, standing on the point where Portovenere's harbour meets the open sea, right beside the medieval walls and the Doria Castle above it - which is why it still looks more like a fortified monastery than a resort from the water. The town itself is the quiet, less-visited neighbour of the Cinque Terre proper: same UNESCO listing, same pastel houses stacked above a harbour, far fewer day-trippers, because the trains that flood Vernazza and Manarola do not stop here.

Walk to the end of the point past the castle and the medieval houses narrow into Via Capellini, which leads to the Church of San Pietro, a black-and-white striped Gothic church built directly into the rock in the 13th century - the view from its terrace over the Gulf of La Spezia is the single best framed shot in town. Below it, steps lead down to Byron's Grotto, where the poet is said to have started his swim across to Shelley's house in Lerici. Boats for the Cinque Terre and for Palmaria island, the largest of Portovenere's three islands and good for an afternoon of walking and swimming away from the crowds, both leave from the harbour directly below the hotel.
