Grand Hôtel du Lac
The Grand Hôtel du Lac is a Relais & Châteaux boutique hotel in the centre of Vevey, on the shore of Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Montreux. The hotel's own website dates its elegance to 1868 and places it among the terraced Lavaux vineyards, with the Alps across the water and the Gruyère region close by. Breakfast is served with a view over the lake.
Food is a strength. The gourmet restaurant Emotions by Guy Ravet is rated 17/20 by Gault & Millau, the Véranda is a brasserie, and in summer a Buddha Bar pop-up restaurant opens beside the pool. The hotel also has a spa with treatments and a relaxation area, and a number of rooms and salons for seminars, banquets and weddings.
We treat it as a Swiss lakefront classic: a historic house with a long tradition rather than a new design hotel. It is rated five stars by the hotel and carries the Relais & Châteaux label. Photographs: the hotel's own website.
The area
Vevey has been making chocolate longer than almost anywhere, and for a good reason: this is where Henri Nestlé founded his company in 1867, and where, in 1875, a local confectioner named Daniel Peter worked with him to invent milk chocolate itself - Nestlé still keeps its world headquarters here today, on the same lakefront. The town's other defining resident arrived by a stranger route: Charlie Chaplin settled in Vevey in 1952, after being effectively exiled from the United States during the McCarthy era, and lived out the last twenty-five years of his life on an estate just above the town; it is now the Chaplin's World museum, and a statue of him stands on the lake promenade.
Roughly once a generation - five times a century, by the confraternity's own reckoning, most recently in 1999 and 2019 - Vevey holds the Fête des Vignerons, a wine-growers' festival dating back to the sixteenth century and recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, filling the Grande Place (Europe's second-largest market square after Lisbon's) with a production involving thousands of local performers. Between festivals, the same square hosts a Tuesday and Saturday market backed by vineyard terraces climbing the hills above the lake - the Lavaux terraces, also UNESCO-listed, are a short walk or train ride along the shore toward Lausanne.
