Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach

Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach opened in November 2014 on Jumeirah Beach Road, in a residential beachfront neighbourhood of Dubai. According to the Four Seasons press room it is a low-rise resort on 14 acres (5.6 hectares) of landscaped gardens and pools, designed by WATG in a Spanish-Mediterranean style with Arabic accents, with 237 rooms, of which 188 are guest rooms and 49 are suites. Interiors open onto views of the sea or the city skyline, and Dubai International Airport is about 25 minutes away.

The resort has a 270-metre natural beach with kayaks, dinghies, catamarans and paddleboards, two large outdoor pools and an indoor spa pool under a glass canopy, two hard tennis courts and a 24-hour fitness centre. The Pearl Spa has ten treatment rooms, including a couple's suite.

Dining includes the Mercury Rooftop (Mediterranean-Asian), Sea Fu (modern seafood, designed by Tihany), Jou Jou Brasserie (Mediterranean), Shai Salon for tea and Hendricks Bar. Several independent restaurants occupy a curved building opposite the main entrance, among them Coya, Mimi Kakushi and Nammos. Photographs: the Four Seasons press room (press.fourseasons.com).

The area

Most visitors see Dubai from a resort terrace. It is worth one day on the other side. Start in Al Fahidi, the restored old quarter of wind towers and pearl merchants' houses, then eat in Karama, the low-rise neighbourhood where the Indian community cooks.

For art, Alserkal Avenue is a cluster of galleries in old marble-factory warehouses. The Museum of the Future sits in the financial district. In the evening, the Jumeirah Fishing Harbour has good seafood with the boats in front of you.

If you are up early, rent a bike for the Al Qudra track and watch the sun rise over the desert. A crewed boat for a few hours is cheaper than it sounds, and it gives you the skyline, the Burj Al Arab and the Palm from the water. October to April is the season; summer is too hot to do any of this.
