Château de Fonscolombe
The Château de Fonscolombe is a Relais & Châteaux hotel at Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, a few kilometres from Aix-en-Provence. According to the Relais & Châteaux description, it combines the elegance of an 18th-century historic monument with Provençal art de vivre. Behind its ochre facades the family home with an old Italian charm stands in an estate of 50 hectares of vineyards.
The estate's own wines accompany a cuisine that takes its inspiration from the daily harvest of the organic kitchen garden and from local artisans' produce, with the chef building a dialogue between the land and his own creativity. The hotel presents itself as well suited to family stays, with spacious rooms in several categories, from Deluxe and Tradition rooms to Prestige rooms and suites and junior suites, and a swimming pool suitable for children. There are many activities on site and nearby.

The area
Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade is a quiet Provençal village about twenty minutes north of Aix-en-Provence, and it would likely stay off most itineraries entirely if not for Château La Coste, the 200-hectare wine estate on its edge that has turned itself into one of the more unusual art destinations in France. The vineyard is genuine and old - the estate traces its wine-making back to Roman times, and today farms Vermentino and other varietals organically under full biodynamic (Demeter) certification - but what draws most visitors is what has been built among the vines: a wine cellar by Jean Nouvel sunk into the hillside, an art centre and restaurant by Tadao Ando, an auditorium and gallery pavilion by Oscar Niemeyer, and permanent installations by artists including Louise Bourgeois scattered across the walking trails between them.
The result is a single afternoon that moves between contemporary architecture, art and wine tasting without much sense of seams - visitors are largely left to wander the estate's trails at their own pace rather than follow a fixed tour. The village itself, around the estate, keeps to the unhurried rhythm typical of the Aix countryside: stone farmhouses, cypress-lined lanes, and the same rolling, vine-covered light that drew painters to this part of Provence in the first place.
