Our notes
AthensWas
AthensWas is a 21-room boutique hotel on Dionysiou Areopagitou, the pedestrian street that runs beneath the Acropolis. The hotel's own site describes it as a five-star design hotel with rooms and suites that look over the Acropolis and the old neighbourhoods around it. The Hellenic Grand Suite is the flagship suite, and the interiors mix dark timber, marble and stone with contemporary Greek art.
The address is the main attraction. According to the hotel, the Acropolis Metro station is 200 metres away, the entrance to the archaeological site and the Acropolis Museum are about 300 metres away, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus is 350 metres away and the National Garden is 500 metres away. Plaka, the old town, is on the doorstep, and Constitution Square and the Parliament are about a kilometre away.
Sense, the rooftop restaurant, sits at the top of the building and looks straight at the floodlit Acropolis, which makes it one of the more memorable dinner tables in the city. The hotel is in the Michelin Guide, without a Key, and is a Design Hotels member.
The review scores recorded on 30 August 2026 were 9.0 from 747 reviews on Booking.com, 4.7 from 650 on Google Maps and 4.7 from 607 on TripAdvisor, where it ranked 15th of 371 hotels in Athens. Photographs: the hotel's own material on athenswas.gr.
The area
Athens is busy and it knows it. Overtourism is a real strain in the centre, so pick your hours: the Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus first thing, the Acropolis slopes late in the day.
The neighbourhoods are the reason to stay a few nights. Psyrri is graffiti and good tavernas. Plaka and the whitewashed lanes of Anafiotika sit right under the Acropolis. Kolonaki is the smart end of town, with the Benaki Museum and the cable car or a 20-minute climb up Mount Lycabettus for the best view of the city. Koukaki and Pangrati are where Athenians actually live and eat.
In summer, catch a film at the rooftop Cine Paris, running since the 1920s, with the Acropolis lit up behind the screen. The contemporary art museum EMST, in a former brewery, is worth an afternoon.

Athens: a city to stay in, not pass through
Most visitors give Athens one night on the way to the islands. The neighbourhoods reward three, and two design hotels in the centre run at about USD 352 a night with breakfast.
