Our notes
Athens Capital Center Hotel - MGallery Collection
Athens Capital Center Hotel is an MGallery hotel at 4 Eleftheriou Venizelou Avenue, in Kolonaki, with Syntagma Square and the old neighbourhood of Plaka close by. According to the hotel, art and Grecian marble run through the interiors, with unique artworks throughout, and the hotel is certified Green Key. It offers art-themed experiences, including a workshop where guests make their own komboloi, the Greek worry beads.
The main draw is the rooftop: a pool terrace with views from the Acropolis to the Saronic Gulf, and the Mappemonde restaurant and bar-lounge beside the rooftop infinity pool, serving cocktails and Mediterranean dishes. Below, MFlavours serves Greek and Mediterranean cuisine from an open kitchen, and the Galerie Cafe has art on the walls and serves crepes, coffee and cocktails. Rooms range from Classic Rooms with a queen bed to Superior and Deluxe rooms, some with balconies, and Junior, Deluxe and Executive Suites up to a Presidential Suite. There is a fitness centre and three function spaces named after Greek painters.

The area
Athens is busy and it knows it. Overtourism is a real strain in the centre, so pick your hours: the Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus first thing, the Acropolis slopes late in the day.
The neighbourhoods are the reason to stay a few nights. Psyrri is graffiti and good tavernas. Plaka and the whitewashed lanes of Anafiotika sit right under the Acropolis. Kolonaki is the smart end of town, with the Benaki Museum and the cable car or a 20-minute climb up Mount Lycabettus for the best view of the city. Koukaki and Pangrati are where Athenians actually live and eat.
In summer, catch a film at the rooftop Cine Paris, running since the 1920s, with the Acropolis lit up behind the screen. The contemporary art museum EMST, in a former brewery, is worth an afternoon.

Athens: a city to stay in, not pass through
Most visitors give Athens one night on the way to the islands. The neighbourhoods reward three, and two design hotels in the centre run at about USD 352 a night with breakfast.
