Where to book

Where a hotel takes bookings on its own site, we send you there first. It is usually the cheapest way in, and the only one where a rewards discount counts.

Our notes

The best months

November to March. This is South Africa's summer, with long days and the kind of weather that makes the Garden Route, the coast and a pool overlooking the ocean hard to leave.

Knysna can be visited throughout the year, but if the idea is to combine the Garden Route with warm days, long evenings and plenty of time outside, this is when we would come.

What you get

An exclusive guest house high on the Knysna Heads, with one of those views that becomes part of the reason for booking.

Alexander Guest House is small, personal and considerably more intimate than a hotel. Its elevated position above Knysna's famous lagoon gives the house sweeping views across the water, the Heads and the Indian Ocean beyond, while the atmosphere stays relaxed rather than formal.

On arrival, guests are welcomed with complimentary wine and a cheese platter, a thoughtful touch that sets the tone for the stay.

Service is exceptionally attentive and personal, from a team that notices what you need without making you feel looked after every minute of the day.

All rooms are beautifully appointed, and some have private terraces with views across the ocean or towards the channel between the Knysna Heads. Breakfast is excellent and worth taking slowly, particularly when there is no reason to hurry away from the view.

There is also a very good bar for the point in the afternoon when sightseeing has officially finished, and private parking is available at the property.

Our choice would be the Penthouse with its own pool. If you are going to stay this high above Knysna, having your own outdoor space and a pool overlooking the water seems the right way to do it.

Around it

Knysna is one of the Garden Route's best-known lagoon towns, built around the vast Knysna Lagoon, where the water meets the Indian Ocean through the narrow passage between the two Knysna Heads.

The lagoon shapes much of the town. Boats cross the water, the waterfront and harbour are lined with restaurants, and the famous Heads rise on either side of the entrance to the ocean. This gives Knysna a completely different character from the smaller beach towns along the Garden Route.

The waterfront is particularly good for an easy afternoon or evening, with plenty of restaurants serving seafood and Knysna's famous oysters. The oysters are part of the local identity for good reason, whether ordered simply with lemon or as part of a longer seafood dinner.

The Knysna Heads themselves are worth exploring too. Staying at Alexander means the views other visitors drive out to see are already waiting when you wake up.

From Knysna, the rest of the Garden Route is easy to explore by car, with beaches, forests and smaller coastal towns close enough for day trips before you return to the Heads in the evening.

Our take

Alexander Guest House is the kind of guest house that makes a stop on the Garden Route feel like a destination in its own right.

It is exclusive without being stiff, personal without being intrusive, and small enough that the service feels individual. Ultimately, though, it is the setting that stays with you.

We would choose the Penthouse with the private pool, leave enough time for breakfast and avoid planning every hour of the day.

Explore Knysna. Eat the oysters. Drive the Garden Route.

Then come back up to the Heads for the view.
